Favourite Verses Part 1: Hebrews 6:19a

Anchor - Hebrews 6:19 - We have this hope as anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast.

Over the next few posts I’m going to be sharing with you some of my favourite Bible verses. I love the whole Bible but these verses have been extremely and particularly encouraging to me over different stages of my life. I hope you can be blessed by them too.

First up we have Hebrews 6:19a:

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, sure and strong.

I love anchors. I’m not into sailing or boats, but I love anchors because they remind me of this verse. On my wedding day, knowing that this verse was special to me, my husband gave me a necklace with a little anchor pendant. He gave it to symbolise our decision to make the hope we have in God the anchor of our marriage. It was already a favourite verse of mine, but since that day, it has held extra special meaning to me.

It’s a powerful analogy that the author of Hebrews makes in this verse. If you think about the purpose of an anchor in securing and strengthening a boat, it’s pretty cool knowing that our hope in Christ has the same effect on our soul.

When I was a kid, we had a family holiday on a houseboat. I remember one particular night it was windy and storming and I was scared that we would get washed far away into the open sea. It was an irrational fear because we had a strong anchor securing us to our location. But I didn’t know how strong the anchor would prove until I woke up the next morning to see that all was good. The anchor had kept us from drifting.

This is what hope does for us in our storms of life. By clinging to hope, we don’t need to fear in the unknown and dangerous as we know that no matter what we face, God holds us securely. Leaning on the strength of God, looking ahead to His promise of eternal life, knowing that He’ll never leave our side, we have an unbreakable hope.

Hebrews 6:19 definitely does not mean that because of hope we won’t face awful and hard times. We will and we do. Hope is the promise through those times. Whatever the outcome, we have a loving and powerful God who is sovereign. Hope is comfort, knowing that He is walking through the challenges with us. Hope is peace and assurance, knowing that there will be a better day, whether on this earth or on the next.

In The Message translation, it says our hope in Jesus is “an unbreakable spiritual lifeline”. I love that! No matter the wind or rough seas that come, we can rest assured, clinging to the hope that we have in an all-powerful, ever-constant God who loves us and promises us eternal life.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

God is constant. Hebrews 13:8 is also one of my favourite verses. Whatever our changing circumstances may be, He is the same. We can trust His character won’t change.

I encourage you to memorise Hebrews 6:19a. It’s not long. But it’s very powerful:

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, sure and strong.

I pray that you always know the sure and strong hope that comes with being a follower of Christ.
